Image Description
Non-keratinizing squamous metaplasia is seen in the trigone region of more than 90% of women of reproductive age. It is considered to be a part of normal histologic findings. The squamous epithelium contains abundant clear cytoplasm due to intracytoplasmic glycogen, conspicuous cytoplasmic borders, and small dark nuclei. It does not increase the risk for subsequent development of urothelial or squamous cell carcinoma.
