Image Description

This biopsy from another case shows ulceration of the surface urothelium and intense granulomatous inflammation in the lamina propria surrounding the eggs. S. hematobium eggs can be distinguished from other Schistosomes by their terminal spine - a feature not readily apparent in histologic sections. Urinary schistosomiasis - also known as Bilharziasis - is endemic in the Middle East and Nile Valley regions.
