Microscopic features of Sertoli cell tumors (SCT) of the testis (continued from the previous slide): The tumor cells have moderate amounts of pale, clear, or eosinophilic cytoplasm. Some tumors have prominent cytoplasmic vacuoles (containing lipid) creating a microcystic or signet ring appearance. The nuclei are uniform, round to oval, and have punctate nucleoli.
Cytologic atypia is minimal or absent and mitotic activity is not increased, except in cases that pursue a malignant course. Occasional cases may have a prominent lymphocytic infiltrate which can create confusion with seminoma.
