Gross Pathology: Testicular teratomas are firm, multinodular masses usually containing solid and cystic areas. The cysts are generally smaller than 1 cm and filled with watery or mucoid fluid.
The cut surface of teratomas is heterogenous and corresponds to the components present. Cartilaginous areas (seen in the center of this image) are recognizable as pearly or bluish-white, semi-translucent solid foci.
Soft, fleshy, encephaloid (brain-like) or hemorrhagic areas correspond to foci of immature embryonic tissue. Pigmented areas may be seen.
