Introduction: Post-pubertal teratomas are malignant germ cell tumors containing several types of tissues originating from one or more germinal layers. The tissues may be mature (well-differentiated) or immature (embryonic type).
The vast majority of post-pubertal teratomas are seen as a component of mixed germ cell tumors (45-50% of cases). Pure teratomas make up only about 5-7% of all germ cell tumors.
This orchiectomy specimen of a mixed germ cell tumor had a major component of teratoma. The cut surface shows cystic and fleshy, solid areas as well as many bluish-white nodules of hyaline cartilage.
