Embryonal CA: Gross Pathology

Embryonal carcinoma (EC) is usually seen in the setting of mixed germ cell tumor. Pure EC is uncommon (about 10% of testicular tumors). The peak incidence is seen at about 30 yrs of age and it is rare in children. Clinically, it presents as a testicular mass, sometimes accompanied by gynecomastia (10% of cases). Metastases are found in about 40% of cases at presentation. The specimen photograph shows pure embryonal carcinoma in a 34 y/o male. The tumor has a variegated appearance with areas of hemorrhage and necrosis.
