With immunostains for high molecular weight cytokeratin, the atrophic glands have a fragmented basal cell layer. Occasional glands may appear to be completely devoid of basal cells in certain planes of section. Caution should be exercised in diagnosing cancer in atrophic-appearing glands solely on the basis of absence of basal cell layer.
