Acute prostatitis is usually symptomatic and is treated empirically with antibiotics. Needle biopsy is contraindicated in men with symptomatic acute prostatitis because of the risk of spreading the infection. The image shows marked neutrophilic infiltrate within and around glands. Some glands are partially destroyed. Cases where acute inflammation is encountered are best diagnosed as "benign prostatic tissue with acute inflammation." The term ‘prostatitis’ is a clinical term and perhaps should not be used in pathology reports. A pathologist should only comment on the presence or absence of inflammation.
