Basal Cell Hyperplasia with Prominent Nucleoli

Image Description
In rare instances, basal cell hyperplasia shows prominent nucleoli. Such cases were previously labeled atypical basal cell hyperplasia. Since this lesion has no malignant potential, the use of the term atypical is no longer recommended so as not to alarm the clinician and the patient. In most cases, this is in response to inflammation nearby.
