Intraluminal eosinophilic crystalloids are associated more frequently with cancer than with benign glands; however, they are not specific for cancer and up to 5% of benign prostate needle biopsies show these structures. They can also be seen in atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (adenosis), PIN, and other benign conditions. Due to their frequent association with cancer, the presence of eosinophilic crystalloids should prompt a close scrutiny of the glands harboring them.
