Sheets of neoplastic cells with marked nuclear pleomorphism and perinuclear halos are seen. The presence of binucleation in some cells with others void of nuclei are typical of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. Distinct cytoplasmic membranes and nuclear membrane irregularity, described as 'raisinoid' nuclei are also typical features. Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma should be distinguished from clear cell renal cell carcinoma and oncocytoma as chromophobe has a more indolent clinical behavior than clear cell renal cell carcinoma and is malignant in contrast with oncocytoma.
