Multilocular cystic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential is a rare tumor with excellent prognosis. It was previously known as multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma - a term that is no longer recommended. Most cases are discovered incidentally. When correctly classified, it is not known to recur or metastasize.
As the name suggests (and shown in this photograph), the tumor is composed exclusively of variably sized cysts separated by thin septa. The cysts may contain clear, serous, gelatinous, or hemorrhagic fluid. By definition, there are no visible tumor nodules in the cystic spaces.
