Microscopic Features: One of the characteristic features of rhabdoid tumor of kidney is the presence of large, intracytoplasmic eosinophilic hyaline globules which cause lateral displacement of the nucleus and impart a plasmacytoid appearance. Several cells in this image have globular inclusions.
Ultrastructurally, hyaline globules are composed of tufts of intermediate filaments. The globular inclusions may not be apparent in all cells and may only show focal distribution. Immunohistochemical staining with vimentin and cytokeratin can often highlight the inclusions when they are inconspicuous on routine stains.
