Early gastric carcinoma is defined as cancer limited to the mucosa or mucosa and submucosa. Muscularis externa is not invaded. The regional lymph node status is not taken into account in the definition. This low power view shows an ulcer (center) the base of which contained early gastric carcinoma (see next two images for higher magnification).
