Patients with neurofibromatosis 1 are at greatly increased risk of developing GISTs of the small intestine. These GISTs are typically small, multiple, and indolent. Hyperplasia of the interstitial cells of Cajal can also be observed. Given these patients' other risk factors, the GISTs alone do not significantly impact prognosis.
