IPMN : Clinical Features
Image Description
Clinical Features: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of pancreas are quite common in the elderly and are usually diagnosed between the ages of 50 to 70 years (mean age 65 years). There is a slight male predilection.
IPMNs, especially the branch duct type, are usually discovered incidentally during imaging for other medical reasons; however, some patients present with abdominal pain, weight loss, jaundice, and diabetes mellitus. Additionally, some patients may have a history of chronic pancreatitis.
Approximately 50%-64% of main duct IPMN are associated with invasive adenocarcinoma, while 18% of branch duct IPMN are associated with carcinoma. There are no well-known risk factors for the development of IPMN.
