Introduction & Clinical: Mesenchymal hamartoma of liver is a common benign pediatric tumor usually seen in male infants by the age of 1 year. It makes up approximately 8% of all pediatric liver tumors. Serum AFP levels may be normal or markedly elevated. The usual presentation is with a non-tender abdominal mass.
Gross Pathology: Most tumors are solitary, well-circumscribed and quite large (size ranges from few cm to more than 30 cm). Right lobe of liver is affected more commonly. About 30% of cases are pedunculated. The tumor is usually composed of multiple cysts filled with clear amber-colored or mucoid fluid and separated by solid areas. Foci of hemorrhage and necrosis are rare and suggest the presence of undifferentiated sarcoma.
