At high magnification, this HCC comprises sheets and nests of large tumor cells with pleomorphic nuclei, prominent nucleoli, abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, scattered Mallory bodies (dense eosinophilic cytoplasmic structures), and distinct cell borders. HCC tumor cells often contain fat, glycogen, Mallory bodies, and alpha-1 antitrypsin globules (even in patients without genetic alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency). Further evidence of hepatocellular origin includes immunoreactivity for albumin, fibrinogen, hepatocyte cytokeratins (8, 18), alpha-1 antitrypsin, or alpha-1 antichymotrypsin.
