Herpes Simplex Virus Hepatitis
Image Description
The histologic hallmark of HSV hepatitis is irregular coagulative necrosis with surrounding hemorrhage and minimal inflammatory response, which correlates with the grossly-evident mottling seen in the previous image. HSV hepatitis is an uncommon complication of adult HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection and the nonspecific clinical features often delay the diagnosis until acute liver failure ensues.
