Cronkhite-Canada syndrome shows diffuse hamartomatous/inflammatory type polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract with the exception of esophagus. The large bowel mucosa shows crypt distortion, dilated glands, edematous lamina propria, and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate. An important diagnostic clue is the presence of similar histologic changes in the intervening, non-polypoid mucosa.

About the Disease
Hamartomatous polyps of gastrointestinal tract occur sporadically as well as components of genetic or acquired syndromes. When occurring in the syndromic setting, some of them are associated with germline mutations in tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes and carry increased risk of malignancies.
