Image Description

Adenomyoma of Gallbladder: Microscopically, it shows a collection of cystically dilated glands surrounded by hyperplastic smooth muscle bundles. The myoid component may be absent in some cases.

The pathogenesis is most likely developmental and not neoplastic. It resembles exuberant Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses. However, the glands do not communicate with the surface mucosa and their configuration is not classic for Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses. Rare cases of adenomyoma show in-situ papillary tumors which are classified as intracholecystic neoplasm arising in adenomyomatous nodules.
