Image Description

Clinical Presentation: Cholesterolosis by itself is usually asymptomatic and its clinical significance is not known. It is generally encountered as an incidental finding in cholecystectomy or autopsy specimens. Symptoms, if any, are usually due to associated gallstones or cholecystitis.

In some patients, cholesterolosis may cause dull, right upper quadrant pain and/or abdominal discomfort with certain foods. In rare instances, excessive lipid deposits form cholesterol polyps that project into the lumen. They may cause temporary blockage and repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis. Overall, cholesterolosis is not associated with hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease or increased risk of gallbladder carcinoma.
