This image from the edge of an ulcer in herpes esophagitis shows numerous multinucleated squamous cells - another helpful diagnostic feature of this condition. Cowdry type A intranuclear inclusions are also present. They may not always be identifiable, especially if the biopsy is taken from the center of the ulcer instead of the margins.
