The image shows variably-sized follicles in a case of sporadic multinodular goiter. Many cases show chronic inflammatory cells within the stroma. If cytologic atypia is detected within the nodules themselves in a multinodular goiter, it raises the possibility of previous exposure to radioactive substances. If cytologic atypia is present in between the nodules, dyshormonogenetic goiter should be excluded.
