The amyloid deposition in medullary thyroid carcinoma varies from focal to extensive (as seen here). Amyloid is a helpful feature when present, but is not a prerequisite for diagnosis. Amyloid stains bright orange/red color with Congo Red and shows the characteristic apple-green birefringence under polarized light.
