About 50% of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) present with metastases, which may be regional (regional lymph nodes, liver) or distant (lung, bones). Metastases can appear many years after the resection of the primary tumor; therefore, long-term follow-up is necessary.
This image shows liver metastases from a PanNET. Primary neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the liver are extremely rare and much less common than liver metastases from NENs arising elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, lung, or other sites. Therefore, before a NEN is accepted as a liver primary, the possibility of metastases must be excluded.
