Condyloma Acuminata : Treatment
Image Description
Treatment of Condyloma Acuminata: Many cases of genital warts are treated based on clinical impression. Biopsies are not routinely required except in cases where the lesions appear atypical, pigmented, indurated, fixed, or ulcerated. Biopsies are also done if the lesions persist after initial treatment.
Condylomas regress spontaneously in about 50% of cases, therefore observation is an option. In the remainder, the initial treatment usually consists of topical podophyllotoxin (0.5% podofilox solution or gel), or imiquimod 5% cream. The treatment removes the warts but does not cure HPV infection. Therefore, recurrences are common (reported to be between 30-70%).
Provider-applied therapies include cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, electrosurgery, laser therapy, or surgical excision.
