The late stages of systemic sclerosis are marked by skin atrophy and sclerosis. The skin is stretched over the underlying subcutaneous tissues and becomes shiny, smooth and waxy in appearance. The mobility of hands and feet decreases and flexion contractures may develop. The stretched skin is susceptible to trauma and ulceration especially around bony prominences.
