Image Description

Pemphigus vulgaris is a serious acute or chronic autoimmune disease characterized by bullous lesions on skin and mucus membranes. The underlying pathogenesis is formation of IgG antibodies to desmogleins which are the transmembrane glycoproteins of the desmosomes. The resulting acantholysis leads to formation of widespread confluent flaccid blisters on normal-appearing skin. The bullae rupture easily leading to extremely painful erosions.
