Lugol's Iodine Test: One of the oldest methods of demonstrating amyloid in gross specimens is to apply Lugol's iodine solution (aqueous iodine/potassium iodide solution) to the cut surface. Areas containing amyloid turn dark brown. This property of amyloid is similar to starch; hence the name amyloid (starch-like).
