Image Description

Lipoma Cytogenetics: Majority of lipomas show structural rearrangements of chromosome 12q13-15. Most commonly, this results from translocation t(3;12)(q27-28;q13-15). Less often, the translocations involve 12q13-15 and other chromosomes, including 1p, 2p, 2q, 4q, 5q, 11q, and 12p. One such rearrangement involving 5q is shown here.

This image shows metaphase FISH targeting HMGA2 gene in a lipoma. Arrowhead indicates normal chromosome 12. This case had t(5;12)(q33;q14) where the entire HMGA2 locus was translocated to chromosome 5 (arrow).
