Image Description

Leakage of silicone gel into the breast parenchyma from a ruptured implant incites an inflammatory response that may be diffuse (silicone mastitis) or produce nodular lesions (silicone granulomas).

The cut surface of a breast specimen with silicone mastitis shows firm fibrotic tissue containing numerous cystic spaces filled with pale viscous material (silicone). The specimen may have a gritty feeling when cut if there is extensive calcification.
