Molecular Subtypes of Breast Cancer - Basal-like: Basal-like breast cancers are high-grade tumors that often show areas of geographic necrosis (as seen here) and brisk mitotic activity (often >40 mitoses/10hpf).
Mutations in TP53 are commonly present (almost 80% of cases) and are nonsense or frameshift type mutations. In contrast, the TP53 mutations seen in luminal breast cancers are usually missense mutations. There is very little mutational overlap between luminal and basal-like breast cancers. From mutational standpoint, basal-like breast cancers resemble serous cancers of the ovary than other breast cancer types.
