Molluscum Contagiosum : Microscopic
Image Description
Molluscum Contagiosum - Microscopic Features (continued from the previous slide): The infected cells mature and die and are extruded from the surface of the epidermis. These viral inclusion-filled ghost cells are referred to as Henderson-Patterson bodies (or Molluscum bodies). They are eosinophilic in early infection and acquire basophilic hue as they mature.
Usually, there is no dermal infiltrate. However, if the lesion ruptures and inclusion bodies enter the dermis, the inflammatory response may be quite intense. The dermal lymphoid infiltrate may contain CD30+ large atypical cells and mimick a CD30+ cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorder.
