Epidemiology: This map shows CDC's current estimates of where Coccidioides spp. live in the environment in the United States. Coccidioides immitis is found primarily in the dry, dusty soil in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and south-central part of Washington state. Coccidioides posadasii is found primarily in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Texas, parts of southern California, as well as Mexico and parts of Central and South America. See next image for international distribution of Coccidioides spp.
Coccidioidomycosis affects all ages, although it is most common in adults >60 years. The vast majority of cases result in a self-limiting respiratory illness. However, in immunocompromised states, there is a risk of disseminated disease.
