Comments:
Goblet cell carcinoid, Group B (Adenocarcinoma ex GCC, signet ring-cell type). Large irregular clusters or sheets of signet ring cells are present in the lamina propria. There is moderate cytologic atypia. The tumor cells may also be arranged individually and infiltrate discohesively throughout the wall of the appendix. The regular round or oval clusters of GCC, Group A, are not seen. Acute inflammatory cells are also present. There is often desmoplastic response and destruction of the normal architecture of the appendix.
