Comments:
Microscopic Features: Gallbladder mucosa shows villous hyperplasia. The villi are expanded by abundant lipid-laden macrophages with microvacuolated or foamy cytoplasm. In mild cases, the foam cells are limited to the lamina propria of villous tips. With more severe involvement, the foam cells expand the entire villi and extend into the submucosa. The adjacent mucosa is normal or inflamed (if gallstones are present).
