Neural Fibrolipoma : Differential Diagnosis
Image Description
Differential diagnosis of neural fibrolipoma includes 1) localized lipomas of nerves - they are localized in contrast to the diffuse nature of neural fibrolipoma; 2) Neuromas and neurofibromas - there is proliferation of neural elements, whereas neural fibrolipoma shows compression atrophy of nerve fibers; 3) Diffuse lipomatosis - it primarily affects subcutis and muscle and rarely involves nerves.
About this image: There is infiltration of the nerve trunk by expanded fibrofatty tissue with separation of nerve bundles. Perineurium shows concentric thickening. Image courtesy of: Kurt Schaberg, MD, Dept. of Pathology, University of California Davis, Sacramento, California; used with permission.
