Comments:
The diagnostic hallmark of neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is bilateral vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas) affecting vestibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve. Patients with unilateral vestibular schwannomas may be diagnosed with NF2 if they meet certain criteria (see slide 2), including first degree relative with NF2, or if they have additional tumors such as meningiomas, gliomas, neurofibromas, schwannomas involving other cranial or spinal nerves, and cataracts. This image shows a unilateral vestibular schwannoma at the right cerebellopontine angle.
