Small Cell Carcinoma

slide 12 of 28

Comments:
Higher magnification showing nuclear detail. Small cell carcinoma is a highly malignant tumor with a high mitotic count with often extensive necrosis and apoptosis. The tumor cells are typically smaller than three resting lymphocytes, have scant cytoplasm and ill-defined cell borders. The chromatin tends to be finely granular with inconspicuous nucleoli, as demonstrated in this image. Several apoptotic bodies are present in the lower right aspect of the image.
