The embryonal subtype consists of cells that have less cytoplasm than fetal type tumor cells, higher nuclear:cytoplasmic ratios, poorly defined cell borders, and increased mitotic activity. Tumor cells may form rosettes, acini, or tubules. Of the histologic types, macrotrabecular and anaplastic variants have the worst prognosis.
