Gastric Adenocarcinoma, Intestinal Type
Image Description
The image shows tubulo-papillary structures lined by columnar epithelium. Intestinal-type adenocarcinomas of stomach usually arise in a background of chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia. They go through sequential changes consisting of dysplasia, CIS, and superficial carcinoma before becoming overt lesions. Hypochlorhydria is present in the vast majority of cases. Helicobacter pylori is an important factor in their pathogenesis through its role in chronic gastritis. These epidemiologic and etiologic factors are not applicable to diffuse type of gastric carcinomas (Signet ring cell type).
