The distribution of benign and malignant neoplasms of the lung is as follows: Carcinoma 90% (approx. 80% are non-small cell carcinomas and 10% are small cell carcinomas); bronchial carcinoids 5%; mesenchymal and other miscellaneous neoplasms 5% (benign tumors such as hamartomas and malignant tumors such as sarcomas and lymphomas).
