1: Choriocarcinoma
Comments: Choriocarcinoma is an uncommon testicular germ cell tumor that is usually seen as a component of mixed germ cell tumor. Many patients present with metastases to lung or brain. This image shows admixture of polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm (cytotrophoblast) and large multinucleated cells with smudged nuclear chromatin (syncytiotrophoblast).
2: Choriocarcinoma
Comments: Cytotrophoblastic cells may be arranged in sheets or villous-like architecture in a hemorrhagic background.
3: Choriocarcinoma
Comments: A “cap” of syncytiotrophoblastic cells is seen in this hemorrhagic and necrotic focus of choriocarcinoma. In some cases, the necrotic and hemorrhagic areas regress and a residual scar is the only evidence of prior existence of the tumor.
4: Choriocarcinoma
Comments: This image shows abundant syncytiotrophoblasts. In some cases, they may be inconscpicuous or even absent.
5: Choriocarcinoma
Comments: In classic cases of choriocarcinoma, syncytiotrophoblasts form a “cap” around clusters of cytotrophoblasts in an attempt to mimic the architecture of immature placental villi.
